Background:

Verifact360 is a cloud-based platform that allows users to request, update and report on the collection of various Returnable Transport Items such as pallets and PET Strapping.

Verifact was invited by the Construction Industry Federation to their monthly meeting. At this meeting Frank Fleming of Verifact went through the Verifact360 system and CIF members were asked whether they wished to participate in a pilot of the system.

They are a Gold Member of the Irish Green Building Council and continue to lead the way in the field in terms of their approach to sustainability.

Pilot:

Bennett Construction put forward their interest to be the first CIF member to participate in a pilot project using the Verifact360 system.

Bennett Construction advised Verifact that at present wooden pallets, which are potentially re-usable, were being placed in skips on their sites and sent to landfill.

A suitable logistic partner was identified to collect the pallets from Bennett sites and reuse/recycle them as appropriate.

Bennett Construction identified a number of suitable locations and the initial collection using the Verifact360 system took place in December 2024.

How it works:

Verifact360 allows a site (a Collection Point) to request a collection when they have a sufficient number of items to be returned. Verifact organises the collection, sorting and redistribution of those items collected according to their quality.

Items such as pallets that are suitable for reuse are put back, in their existing form, into circulation whereas poorer quality pallets were either used as fuel for kilns to heat treat newly produced pallets or crushed to be used as raw materials for blocks for new pallets.

PET strapping and soft plastics are being assessed for inclusion in upcoming collections.

All the data relating to the collection is recorded and stored on the Verifact360 system and each participant can access reports relevant to their data. The example below showing a report available to Bennett Construction that sets out the amount of pallets collected, reused and repurposed from one of its sites.

Carbon Insetting:

Verifact is working with Munster Technological University to develop a carbon savings calculator. This will be applied to the verified data recorded on Verifact360 to calculate the carbon savings. These CO2 savings can be inset against other emissions in Bennett's operations. These can also be used for verification of reporting of ESG data as required under the CSRD. The initiative is also communicated to Bennett Construction clients who are seeking positive initiatives of this kind.
