Digitalisation in Seafood Supply Chains

Using Digitalisation to improve transparency in seafood supply chains

Read About:

  • Verifact were engaged by UK based Fisheries Innovation and Sustainability (FIS) to implement a digitalisation project in the UK fisheries sector.
  • Verifact harnessed existing technology to enable automatic data transfer.
  • Verifact implemented digital solutions to enhance the competitive position of seafood through improved traceability and provenance.
  • The project was based on demonstrating the advantages that technology brings to the areas of Food Safety, Sustainability and Supply Chain Efficiencies.

Background Context

Collaborating to test how current, ad hoc data collection could be improved by a coordinated approach, Verifact worked with FIS and Seafood Scotland to develop a project whereby seafood supply data is captured once but made available for use as many times as needed by different users - in science, markets, certification, and management.

This seafood data ‘one stop shop' focused on two Scottish species: Nephrops and Haddock. Verifact harnessed existing technology to enable automatic data transfer and looked at opportunities to enhance the competitive position of seafood through improved traceability and provenance.

Your Venture / Solution

The solution developed used secure cloud-based databases to allow fishing and processing businesses to upload and share information.

A ‘toolkit' was developed to support future data sharing projects. The Toolkit includes:

  • A Vessel Details Database to capture information on sustainability and labour practices and policies.
  • A Processor Portal to upload data in line with Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability requirements.
  • A suite of data sharing agreements to set out how the data collected is processed and utilised.
  • A pre-project checklist to help potential participants gauge if they are ready to test digitalised data sharing.

Impact

Verifact worked with a number of high profile seafood processing companies, retailers and primary producers on the project.

Verifact carried out a gap analysis on existing systems and developed digital solutions to enable the businesses involved to assess their readiness for emerging demands for data in seafood supply chains.

The participating companies were able to utilise the solutions developed to demonstrate their sustainability credentials and improve food safety in supply chains.
