One Third of food produced globally is wasted!

Food waste is a global issue with profound effects environmentally, economically and most importantly, socially. This problem continues to escalate, with staggering statistics reported worldwide each year. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 753,000 tonnes of food waste were generated in Ireland alone in 2021. In the UK, FareShare estimates over 6.2 million tonnes of food is wasted by the food industry annually. Meanwhile, in the United States 80 million tonnes of food waste, 38% of all food in America is wasted yearly.

There are two key strands to consider for a business’s strategy for food waste:

  1. Identification of where waste is created in the normal course of production, how waste could be reduced, and used productively instead of being disposed of.

  2.
  3. A business should have a strategy to be implemented in the event of an issue with a production run such as an undeclared ingredient or mislabeling.

Verifact works with clients to help them implement food waste reduction strategies underpinned by our software platform which focuses on early identification of problems in supply chains.
